Szczawnica
Palenica rises directly above the spa town of Szczawnica, on the edge of the Małe Pieniny range. Its slopes on the town side are steep, so the summit is clearly visible from below. On top there is a private mountain hut and a small shepherd's lodge, and right next to them an alpine coaster — one of the best known attractions in Szczawnica.
From the summit clearing the view opens over the Pieniny and the Beskid Sądecki, and in good weather as far as the Tatras. Two lower peaks, Groń and Niżny Groń, rise on the northern side of the massif. The broad grassy dome means the panorama can be followed in almost every direction.
A chairlift from Szczawnica reaches the top in a few minutes; on foot the marked trail takes about an hour. In winter the slopes of Palenica and neighbouring Szafranówka form a ski resort, and in summer family contests and games are held here. It is a half-day destination, convenient also for those who would rather skip the climb.
