A hill above Lake Międzybrodzkie

Góra Żar rises in the Beskid Mały range, above steep wooded slopes falling towards Lake Międzybrodzkie. Its summit was artificially levelled and now holds the upper reservoir of a pumped-storage power plant — one of the most recognisable energy structures in the Polish mountains.

The panorama

From the top you can see the Żywiec Basin with Lake Żywieckie, and above it the ridges of the Beskid Żywiecki and Beskid Śląski together with Magurka Wilkowicka. To the north, beyond Lake Czaniec, stretch the Silesian Foothills; to the east rise Złota Góra, Kiczera and Cisowa. The broad, open summit lets you follow the panorama all the way around.

Attractions and access

A 1300-metre cable car, an asphalt road and two hiking trails lead to the top; the walk from Żarnówka Mała takes about two hours. Three mountain-bike routes have been marked out on the summit, and in winter the lifts and an artificially snowed piste operate. The place is also popular with paragliders.
