Wapnica, Wolin
Piaskowa Góra rises only 53 metres above sea level, yet it is one of the most photographed viewpoints of the Woliński National Park. It lies between Wapnica and Lubin on the island of Wolin, and its steep slopes fall away straight towards the water.
From the edge of the hill you look down on Jezioro Turkusowe, the Turquoise Lake — a former chalk quarry that filled with water. It is the dissolved chalk that gives the lake its distinctive colour, which changes with the light and the season. Traces of the old workings can still be made out, along with chalk deposits carried here by a glacier. The panorama also takes in the waters of the lagoon and the forests of the national park.
The most convenient approach is from Międzyzdroje towards Lubin; in Wapnica turn from Nadbrzeżna street into Turkusowa street, where a car park for visitors has been prepared. From there the blue trail climbs to the viewpoint in about a quarter of an hour over barely half a kilometre. The same trail also leads in from Wicko, Lubin and Dargobądz.
