Legnica
Pustynia Kozłowska lies north of Legnica, near the village of Kozłów, and is one of very few areas of exposed, shifting sand in Poland. It was not formed naturally — it was shaped by military activity. For decades the area belonged to a Soviet training ground used by bomber aviation.
The landscape surprises with contrast: pale, loose sand gives way to low scrub and young woodland gradually reclaiming the ground. The strongest impression comes from the open space, where the dunes form gentle waves. At the turn of August and September the surrounding heaths bloom purple — the best moment to come with a camera.
No public road leads to the desert. The simplest option starts in Kozłów, from where a forest fire road runs for about 3.8 km, roughly an hour each way. The route is flat and easy but offers no shade and no facilities — bring water and a hat.
