Jeglówek, Wieś Jeleniewo
Góra Zamkowa, also called Zamczysko, is a moraine hill 228 m above sea level, situated in the Suwałki Lake District, in the municipality of Jeleniewo, next to the village of Szurpiły. Although its absolute height is not impressive, the summit towers some forty-five metres above the surface of the surrounding lakes, which in the landscape of the Suwałki region produces a surprisingly mountainous effect.
The hill is an archaeological monument, as it served a defensive function in the past. Traces of ramparts and terraces are still legible in the terrain, and the natural conditions themselves, namely the steep slopes and the ring of water around the hill, explain well why this particular spot was chosen for a stronghold.
From the top a wide panorama of the post-glacial landscape opens up: lakes, rolling fields and neighbouring hills, including Góra Kościelna and Góra Cmentarna. From the south-east a narrow bay of Lake Szurpiły reaches up to the hill, and at its foot lies an erratic boulder protected as a natural monument.
Several marked hiking trails from the surrounding villages lead to the hill, and a marked cycling route also runs through the region. The climb to the summit is short but steep and can be slippery after rain, so shoes with good grip are useful. The whole walk, including the way back, takes less than an hour, and the view repays the effort. The trip is best combined with a visit to the Suwałki Landscape Park, one of the most picturesque corners of north-eastern Poland.
