Szklarska Poręba
Czeskie Kamienie is one of the most characteristic peaks of the main ridge of the Karkonosze Mountains, rising to 1417 metres above sea level. Administratively the area belongs to Szklarska Poręba, and the Polish-Czech border runs right across the summit.
The name of the mountain comes from the massive rock blocks that crown its dome. The group of rocks reaches about 11 metres in height and stretches over roughly 50 metres, so from a distance it looks like a wall built on the ridge.
A wide panorama opens up around the rocks. From here you can see Siedem Dolin, Wielki Szyszak, Śnieżka, the Równia pod Śnieżką plateau and the Kozie Grzbiety.
Below the summit the terrain is covered with dense dwarf pine, and lower down with spruce forest. The vegetation underlines the alpine character of this part of the Western Sudetes.
The red trail running along the main ridge of the Karkonosze leads across the summit. A popular approach starts in Jagniątków, from where the blue and black trails cover about 7 kilometres and the walk takes roughly three hours and twenty minutes. The route is not particularly difficult, but it does require fitness and good footwear.
The Czech name of the mountain, Mužské kameny, literally means Men's Stones. The area lies within protected zones on both sides of the border, so walking is allowed only on marked trails. The weather on the ridge changes abruptly, so even in summer it is worth packing warm and waterproof clothing.
