Wieś Żelazno
Wapniarka is a modest, wooded hill rising in the heart of the Kłodzko Valley, close to the village of Żelazno. A three level roofed observation tower stands on its top, the goal of a short and pleasant trip for anyone who wants to look down on the valley without a full day of walking.
The area is one of the most varied landscapes in Lower Silesia. The valley is ringed by the ranges of the Eastern Sudetes, led by the Śnieżnik Massif, and Wapniarka itself makes a convenient goal for a short walk between longer trips into the higher mountains.
The present tower was built in 2010. It is made mainly of timber with metal elements and reaches 15 metres in height. The roof means the platform can be used even when the weather is changeable.
This is not the first structure in this spot. The first tower on Wapniarka was erected back in 1889 but burned down after a lightning strike. Today's construction therefore continues a viewing tradition more than a century old.
The summit is covered by dense forest which clearly limits the panorama. That is why Wapniarka is best visited between late autumn and early spring, when the trees are bare and the view of the surrounding ranges opens up much wider.
The blue hiking trail leads from Żelazno to the top. The route is about 1.7 kilometres long and the ascent takes roughly fifty minutes, so children will manage it too. Benches and a campfire site have been arranged next to the tower, so it is worth planning a longer stop.
