Żary
The Promnitz Tower stands on Gołębie Wzgórze hill in Zielony Las, a large forest complex adjoining the town of Żary in the Lubusz region. The brick structure is 16 metres high and was built in 1864 as a lookout for the town's residents. The access from Żary runs along ul. Komuny Paryskiej.
From the upper platform you can see the southern part of the Żary Hills, the Lower Silesian Forest and, in good weather, the Karkonosze and Izera Mountains. Fragments of bog iron ore are set in the mortar between the bricks — they were meant to absorb water and conduct lightning safely into the ground.
The original granite steps have been replaced with new ones, while fragments of the old treads were built into the approach path. The tower door is opened in the morning and closed in the evening by the local forester, so visits are possible during daylight hours. The tower is reached on foot along a forest path, and Zielony Las is criss-crossed by walking and cycling routes.
