Wieś Krościenko nad Dunajcem
Zamek Pieniński is what remains of a medieval stronghold just below the summit of Zamkowa Góra (799 m a.s.l.) in the Pieniny Właściwe range, inside Pieniny National Park. Only fragments of walls and foundations survive. The site was chosen for its position: a steep, rocky crest overlooking the surrounding ridges.
The stronghold was built in the 13th century and tradition links it with Saint Kinga, hence its second name, the Castle of St Kinga. It was meant to shelter local people from Mongol raids. It lost its function as early as the 14th century and fell into ruin a hundred years later. In 1904 St Kinga's Grotto was carved into a rock niche, and in 2003 the ruins were listed as a historic monument.
Zamkowa Góra can be reached on foot only. The yellow trail from Krościenko nad Dunajcem is about 4 km long, while a longer blue route starts in Szczawnica. The path is steep and stony in places, so sturdy boots help. The top offers a panorama of the Pieniny with the Trzy Korony massif. Walking is allowed on marked trails only.
