Wieś Ustrzyki Górne
Tarnica (1346 m a.s.l.) is the highest summit of the Polish Bieszczady and one of the goals of the Crown of Polish Mountains. It rises in the range of połoniny, the treeless mountain meadows, within Bieszczady National Park above the village of Ustrzyki Górne. The bare, sharply outlined top is visible from most of the surrounding ridges.
An iron cross was placed on the summit in 1987 to commemorate John Paul II's stay in the Bieszczady; a survey marker stands beside it. The view takes in the Polish połoniny and the ranges across the Ukrainian border — Połonina Równa, Połonina Krasna and Svydovets. In exceptionally clear air the Tatras can be made out.
The shortest ascent follows the blue trail from Wołosate, about 4 km and a little over two hours. The longer red route is around 8 km and takes some three and a half hours. National park rules apply: keep to marked trails and descend before dusk. Weather on the połoniny changes very quickly.
