Wieś Susiec
Kościółek is a small hill covered with mixed forest near Susiec in the Roztocze region, encircled by two rivers — the Tanew and the Jeleń. Steep slopes and earth ramparts still readable in the terrain make it one of the more interesting points on the Szumy Trail.
Archaeological research indicates that at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries the hill served as a stronghold. It was not permanently inhabited — it worked as a refuge during raids, as shown by the remains of granaries and storehouses. A legend is also attached to the place, telling of the castle of the knight Gołdapad and his daughter Tanewa, after whom the river was said to be named.
During the Second World War partisans took shelter on the hill; a cross with a plaque commemorates them. The blue Szumy Trail from Susiec leads to Kościółek — the walk up takes about an hour, and the round trip is best planned as a half-day outing. The path runs through forest and is steep and rooty in places.
