The Gocław Tower, also known as the Bismarck Tower, stands on the densely wooded Zielone Wzgórze hill, far from the centre of Szczecin. The stone building is 25 metres high, was raised on a circular plan, and its entrance is closed by a triangular portal. The ceremonial opening took place in 1921.
The design was prepared by Wilhelm Kreis, who drew on the mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna and the tomb of Caecilia Metella. In the round hall at the top a bust of Otto von Bismarck used to be displayed. Of the roughly 250 towers built in his honour around the world, the one in Szczecin was the most expensive project.
The tower once served as a viewpoint; today it is closed and awaiting restoration, yet it makes an impression from the outside — a massive form among old trees. The site lies close to Narciarska Street, and the yellow Gocław Trail crosses Zielone Wzgórze, making it easy to combine the visit with a walk.
