Fabryczna, Gorzów Wielkopolski
The Dominanta is a twenty-metre structure standing on St George's roundabout in Gorzów Wielkopolski, right beside the Staromiejski Bridge to the Zawarcie district. The openwork sphere crowning the tower holds a viewing platform with a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree panorama of the city. Its unusual outline has earned local nicknames — residents call it the Great Spider or Tekla.
The structure has divided the people of Gorzów from the outset. In 2007 it took first place in the Makabryła poll for the ugliest building in Poland, and yet it became a recognisable marker of the city centre. A three-metre electronic board mounted on the tower displays messages, the temperature and announcements of sporting and cultural events.
Beneath the Dominanta lies an underground hall, originally prepared for a shopping arcade. A fountain stands in the middle and the walls are covered with the names of major cities together with their distances from Gorzów. Neither retail nor services ever took hold there. A visit takes about a quarter of an hour.
