The viewpoint at Żłobnica near Bełchatów takes in the open pit of the Bełchatów lignite mine — the largest excavation of its kind in Europe, covering an area comparable to several thousand football pitches. From the edge of the terrace you can see the successive working levels descending into the ground and the machinery operating on them.
Bucket-wheel excavators, spreaders and conveyor belts look like children's toys from this distance, although they are in fact among the largest land machines in the world. In the background rise the chimneys of the Bełchatów power station, the largest lignite-fired plant in the world. The landscape is raw and industrial, quite unlike the rest of the Łódź region.
The terrace was laid out next to the volunteer fire station, and a free car park sits right at the entrance. A stop takes about a quarter of an hour, so the place fits neatly into a break in a journey. It combines well with nearby Góra Kamieńsk, a hill heaped up from the mine's overburden.
