Duszniki-Zdrój
The wooden observation tower stands by the main causeway of the Torfowisko pod Zieleńcem reserve, in the north-western part of the Bystrzyckie Mountains near Duszniki-Zdrój. Built in 2007, it overlooks one of the largest raised bogs in the Sudetes.
The peat layers here are between 3.5 and 8 metres thick and began to form some eight thousand years ago. The vegetation is typical of raised bogs: dwarf pine, cottongrass and peat mosses. The ground is boggy, so visitors move only along boardwalks.
From the top of the tower you can see the broad basin of the bog and the ridges of the Orlickie Mountains. A walk along the boardwalks with a climb up the platform takes about half an hour. Waterproof shoes are worth taking — the reserve has a damp, cool microclimate.
