Wieś Bukowiec
The stone viewing tower stands on the Kesselburg hill, 480 m above sea level, above the village of Bukowiec in the Jelenia Góra Valley. It was most probably built around 1800 as part of a romantic landscape composition. A winding staircase leads to the top, and from the upper platform you can see the Karkonosze mountains, part of the Izera range and the Rudawy Janowickie.
Next to the tower stand the remains of Kessel castle and of a former amphitheatre. Both were deliberately erected as ruins, in keeping with the period fashion for artificial relics of the past — hence the joke that what you visit today are the ruins of ruins. The whole complex lies within the Rudawy Landscape Park. On some maps the tower is labelled Strażnica, a rendering of the German names for fortified towers.
It is best to leave the car at the bend of Widokowa Street near St Martin's church in Bukowiec and continue uphill along the asphalt road. The walk takes just under twenty minutes. The tower can be visited free of charge all year round.
