Wieś Mielnik
Góra Zamkowa in Mielnik is a hill 189 m above sea level, towering over a bend of the river Bug in the eastern part of Podlasie. Traces of a medieval stronghold dated to the 11th–12th century have survived on its top. Today it is a freely accessible viewpoint and the best known spot in the village.
A castle on the hill has been mentioned since 1379. It guarded the western border of the Lithuanian state and served as a residence — Kazimierz Jagiellończyk, Aleksander Jagiellończyk and Zygmunt Stary all stayed here. In 1501 the Union of Mielnik was signed here, one of the more important Polish-Lithuanian agreements before the Union of Lublin.
Of the castle there remain fragments of field stone walls, relics of the Alexander Nevsky chapel of 1865 and the ruins of the castle church of the Holy Trinity. Two approaches lead to the top: from the church ruins and from the foot of the hill at Zamkowa Street. A wide panorama of the Bug valley opens from the summit.
