Zakopane
Szpiglasowy Wierch (2172 m above sea level) lies in the main ridge of the Tatras, between the Valley of the Five Polish Lakes and Morskie Oko. Its name comes from the German word Spiessglas, meaning stibnite — a mineral mined in this area in the second half of the 18th century. The summit is the junction of three ridges: Liptowskie Mury, the Szpiglasowa ridge and the north-eastern ridge with the peaks Miedziane and Opalony Wierch.
The view from the top is among the most valued in the Polish Tatras. It takes in the Valley of the Five Polish Lakes with its cascade of lakes, Morskie Oko and Czarny Staw pod Rysami, and to the south the Slovak Tatras. Thanks to the central position in the ridge the panorama is almost a full circle.
Two yellow trails lead to the summit. The shorter one starts in the Valley of the Five Polish Lakes near Wielki Staw and is 2.5 km long. The longer one, 4.4 km, climbs from Morskie Oko. Both sections are steep and exposed in places, and require good fitness and a sure step.
