Wieś Kościelisko
Grześ is a twin-peaked mountain of 1653 m above sea level in the Western Tatras, west of the Chochołowska Glade, within the boundaries of the village of Kościelisko. It is built of hard quartzite sandstones, and its rounded summit is covered with grass and clumps of dwarf pine.
The open top offers a full panorama of the Western Tatras and, in good weather, the peaks of the High Tatras as well. It looks especially striking in early autumn, when the slopes turn from rust through red to straw yellow. On the summit stands a cross erected in 1992 to commemorate the clandestine meetings of Polish and Slovak opposition activists.
The name comes from the highlander dialect – „grześ” means a ridge falling steeply on both sides. The slopes are used by skiers in winter; a ski run operated here before the war and reopened in 1956. Access: the yellow trail from the mountain hut on the Chochołowska Glade (about 1 hour) or the blue trail via Rakoń.
