A summit and a clearing in the Gorce

Stare Wierchy is a 969 m summit in the Gorce range, set in the main ridge that runs west from Turbacz, above the village of Obidowa. The same name is used for the large clearing lying slightly higher, at about 973 m, through which the tourist traffic on this section of the ridge passes.

The hut and the old route

The clearing is home to the PTTK hut at Stare Wierchy, one of the characteristic shelters of the Gorce. This spot once lay on the so-called Royal Road, the trade route from Cracow to Hungary, mentioned in sources as early as the mid-13th century. Today several marked trails meet here, and the open space of the clearing gives views of the Tatras and Babia Góra.

Getting there

From Rabka-Zdrój the red Main Beskid Trail leads up, about 8.1 km and a little over three hours of walking. Alternatively you can start in Nowy Targ on the blue trail and switch to the green one, which climbs directly to the summit; that version is about 9 km long.
