The Warsaw Uprising Mound is a hill raised from rubble, reaching 121 m above sea level, in the Czerniaków area of the Mokotów district of Warsaw. It was formed from material brought here after the destruction of the Warsaw Uprising and for years remained neglected, known unofficially as the Hill of Death.
The clean-up of the site was initiated in the 1990s by members of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers; the name Mound of National Remembrance was also used at the time. For a round anniversary of the outbreak of the uprising the top was cleared and a staircase was built. On the flat summit stands a several-metre-high Fighting Poland emblem, flanked by two plaques: one dedicated to Home Army soldiers, the insurgents and the city's residents, the other to the creator of the memorial, Eugeniusz Ajewski.
Steps named the Avenue of the “W” Hour lead to the top, lined with small wooden crosses. The climb takes a quarter of an hour, and from the summit you can see the panorama of southern Warsaw with the downtown high-rises.
