Wieś Kostrza
Kostrza rises above the villages of Kostrza, Nowe Rybie, Szyk and Rupniów in the Beskid Wyspowy range. Together with Świnna Góra it forms a separate massif, cut off from the neighbouring ridges by deep passes – an arrangement so characteristic that it gave the whole range its name, the „island Beskids”. The mountain exceeds seven hundred metres and, although it is far from the highest, it is one of the more popular goals around Tymbark and Limanowa.
On the northern slopes lies the Kostrza nature reserve, protecting well-preserved forest communities – Carpathian beech woods and mountain sycamore stands. Old tree stands, damp ravines and moss-covered boulders make the ascent rewarding in itself, even when there are no distant views.
The top is entirely wooded, so panoramas have to be sought in gaps between the trees. As part of the „Discover the Beskid Wyspowy” campaign, however, a table with benches and a large board with a map of the range were installed here, turning the summit into a comfortable resting place. A local legend tells of a stronghold that supposedly sank underground together with part of the slope.
The most convenient route is the green trail from Tymbark – about five kilometres long and covered in a little over two hours. The climb is steady and free of technical difficulties, which makes it a good calm family outing. In winter the forest paths can be icy and call for caution.
