Zakopane
Wielki Kopieniec, 1,328 m above sea level, rises in the lower, forested belt of the Western Tatras between the Olczyska and Chłabowska valleys, within the Tatra National Park. The name comes from the Podhale dialect, in which a hill shaped like a heaped mound was called a kopieniec.
The limestone bedrock favours calcicole plants; the summit and its slopes are among the very few places in Poland where the glacier gentian has been recorded. The open summit dome gives views of the High and Western Tatras as well as Zakopane and the surrounding foothills.
Despite the name suggesting a high mountain, the peak is easy to reach and the trails leading to it are not technically demanding. The green trail from Toporowa Cyrhla is about 2.3 km long and the variant from Jaszczurówka about 3.7 km, which makes Kopieniec a frequent goal for family outings.
