Wieś Kościelisko
Rakoń, 1,879 m above sea level, lies in the Western Tatras in the northern ridge of Wołowiec, along which the Polish-Slovak border runs. It neighbours Wołowiec and Grześ, and its eastern slopes drop into the Upper Chochołowska Valley. The whole area belongs to the Tatra National Park.
The slopes are gentle, covered with grass and clumps of dwarf pine, with small patches of scree. The treeless summit opens a panorama of the Rohacz Lakes on the Slovak side, the pastoral grounds of Hala Chochołowska and the entire ridge of the Western Tatras. Early autumn is especially striking, when the grassy slopes change colour.
The blue trail along the ridge of Grześ leads to Rakoń; the ascent takes about an hour and a little more, the descent slightly less. The route is not technically difficult, which is why walkers from both sides of the border use it readily. Sheep were once grazed on the Polish slopes of the mountain.
