ul. Legionów, Częstochowa
Góra Ossona rises east of the centre of Częstochowa, near Legionów Street, and counts as the highest point within the city limits. It consists of two parts: a natural Jurassic limestone outcrop and an embankment heaped up for the needs of the nearby steelworks. Inside the hill remain the halls of a former pumping station, now inaccessible.
The summit is marked by an impressive limestone rock, from which a wide panorama unfolds: the city, the surrounding forest complex and the castle ruins in Olsztyn in the Jura region. When the air is clear the view reaches much further — as far as distant power plant chimneys and the outline of Babia Góra.
After the war a gliding school operated here, founded by Edward Osson; his name is commemorated by a plaque carved into the rock, with a figure of the Virgin Mary above it. Access is free and unrestricted, with paths leading up from Legionów Street. The spot is popular with cyclists and walkers.
