Wawel Royal Castle stands on a limestone hill above the Vistula, at the edge of Cracow's Old Town. Raised in the Middle Ages and rebuilt in the 16th century in the spirit of the Renaissance, for centuries it was the seat of monarchs and the centre of the country's political life. Today it forms one of the most important historic complexes in Poland.
The heart of the layout is the arcaded courtyard, from which you enter the state rooms, the private royal apartments, the treasury and the armoury. Separate exhibitions present Lost Wawel, devoted to the earliest history of the hill, and the royal gardens. The Dragon's Den and the Sandomierska Tower open seasonally.
The exhibitions have separate routes and entry limits, so it is worth planning the visit in advance and checking the current rules on the castle website. The hill also hosts concerts and open-air events. From here it is a few minutes' walk to the Main Market Square and the Vistula boulevards.
