Wieś Ojców
Pieskowa Skała Castle stands on a limestone outcrop above the Prądnik valley, on the edge of the Ojców National Park in the Kraków district. It is one of the best-preserved castles on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests and the most recognisable landmark of this part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The white rocks and walls form a composition that is hard to mistake for anything else.
The stronghold was raised in the 14th century as one link in a chain of fortifications guarding the trade route from Kraków to Silesia. Over the following centuries it passed to successive noble families, and in the Renaissance it gained an arcaded courtyard with a viewing loggia and decorative portals. Gardens and ponds were laid out around it. A thorough reconstruction in the 20th century restored its former shape.
Inside there is a museum with a permanent exhibition of European art and temporary displays. The castle is often used as a film set, and a visit combines easily with a walk through the Prądnik valley and a stop at the nearby Hercules' Club rock.
