Nidzica
The castle in Nidzica stands in the eastern part of the town, in the Nidzica district on the southern edge of Warmia and Masuria. The first wooden structure was built here in the 13th century, and about a hundred years later it was replaced by brick walls on stone foundations. The massive form with its characteristic towers and brick façade is among the best-known castles in this part of the region.
Over the centuries the building changed hands many times and was repeatedly attacked by domestic and foreign armies. Several times it fell into ruin and lost its defensive role. The decision to rebuild came after the Second World War — thanks to it, the façade, courtyard and walls seen by visitors today have survived.
The interiors serve as the town's cultural centre: they house a museum, a gallery, a community centre and a library. Concerts, exhibition openings, conferences and celebrations are held in the halls. A park surrounds the complex, and the illumination makes the castle impressive after dark as well.
