Podzamcze, Kruszwica
The Mouse Tower is the most recognisable monument of Kruszwica, rising at the base of the Rzępowski Peninsula on Lake Gopło. The octagonal brick structure, over thirty metres tall, is what remains of a 14th-century Gothic castle, of which only fragments of walls have survived apart from it.
From the upper level a panorama opens over the lake, the broad fields and the town itself — Gopło is one of Poland's largest lakes and forms the axis of the Nadgoplański Millennium Park. Part of the castle cellars is open with a display, and a neo-Gothic building on the shore presents archaeological finds.
A legend about King Popiel, said to have been eaten here by mice, is tied to the tower — hence its name. Kruszwica lies on the Piast Route, so it combines well with a visit to Gniezno or Biskupin. By Lake Gopło you can also relax by the water and take a boat trip.
