24, Wieś Rabsztyn
Rabsztyn Castle rises on a rocky hill above the village of Rabsztyn near Olkusz, in the Lesser Poland part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The naturally defensive terrain decided its fate: in the mid-14th century a knight's stronghold was built here — another link in the system of watchtowers known today as the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.
In time the castle grew into an extensive complex made up of the oldest upper section, a middle and a lower castle, and a Renaissance residence from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. It belonged to successive noble families, but from the 18th century it lost importance and fell into decay. The walls were dismantled for building material, and the round tower collapsed after an explosion.
Conservation work has been under way for years: part of the walls, two bridges and the entrance gate have been rebuilt, and the tower with its terrace offers a wide view over the Jurassic landscape. The castle hill also hosts open-air historical events.
