Wzgórze Zamkowe, Wieś Zagórze Śląskie
Grodno Castle stands on the steep Choina hill above Zagórze Śląskie in the Owl Mountains, inside a nature reserve. It was probably founded in the 13th century as a fortified post guarding a route and was gradually extended with walls and gates. In the 16th century, at the height of its importance, Renaissance features were added to the Gothic structure.
The castle was never completely ruined, so its interiors remain easy to read. A visit leads past the chapel with a Renaissance portal, the upper courtyard, the castle, knights' and hunting halls, the torture chamber and the dungeon of Duchess Małgorzata, tied to a local legend. From the tower you can see Lake Bystrzyckie and the ridges of the Owl Mountains.
Marked blue, yellow and green trails lead up the hill from Zagórze Śląskie and the climb takes about fifteen minutes. The castle hosts open-air events, including the Duchess Agnieszka Fair and the „Biała Dama” film festival, and its interiors have appeared in films. Nearby you can visit the dam on the Bystrzyca and the Osówka underground complex.
