Ojcowski Park Narodowy, Wieś Ojców
The ruins of Ojców Castle crown a limestone crag towering over the Prądnik Valley in the heart of Ojców National Park. The stronghold was raised in the second half of the 14th century on the order of King Casimir the Great, as one link in a chain of watchtowers guarding the road from Cracow to Silesia.
The name „Oczec u Skały” was meant to honour Władysław Łokietek, the founder's father, who according to tradition hid in the nearby caves. What survives today is the octagonal keep, the gatehouse blended into the rocks and treetops, fragments of the defensive walls and a well cut into the limestone to a depth of about forty metres.
The greatest asset here is the panorama of Ojców and the limestone outcrops seen from the castle hill; the tower and gate are clearly visible from the valley floor and from Skałka Jonaszówki. A visit combines easily with Łokietek Cave, Hercules' Club and the castle at Pieskowa Skała.
