After Malbork, the castle in Człuchów was the largest complex built by the Teutonic Order in its monastic state. Construction lasted several decades and was completed in the second half of the 14th century. The stronghold consisted of the High Castle, three baileys — western, northern and eastern — and walls and moats that made use of the natural dips between the lakes.
The best preserved element is the brick tower, some 46 metres high, open to visitors and offering a wide view over the town and the surrounding lakes. The castle courtyard, uncovered during several seasons of archaeological work, is also accessible, along with the cellars of the eastern and southern wings. The Regional Museum of Człuchów occupies the interiors.
The permanent exhibition covers the prehistory of the Człuchów area, the results of excavations and the history of the castle in Teutonic and later times, when it served the local starosts. Człuchów itself lies among the lakes and forests of the Krajna Lakeland, between Chojnice and Szczecinek, which makes the castle an easy stop on a longer trip through Pomerania.
