The Casimir Castle rises over the old town of Przemyśl from a hill that had already been occupied by an earlier settlement. It was built after 1340 on the initiative of Casimir III the Great to secure the eastern edge of the kingdom. Relics of a rotunda and a palatium dating back to the times of Bolesław the Brave survive in the courtyard.
In the 16th century the defensive block gained Renaissance features and four corner towers with gun loops; two of them have been rebuilt in modern times after years of neglect. The walls enclose a spacious courtyard, and a park for walking spreads around the hill with views over the San valley and the ring of forts of the Przemyśl Fortress.
The castle houses the stage of the „Fredreum” Drama Society, the oldest amateur theatre in Poland, and its interiors hold exhibitions devoted to Casimir the Great, the history of the theatre and the story of the town. The building is visited with a guide, by prior arrangement; concerts, conferences and performances are held here regularly.
