Gora Zamkowa, Wieś Kurzętnik
The ruins of the Chełmno bishops' castle crown the steep Castle Hill above Kurzętnik, in the Drwęca valley. Construction probably began after 1331, when the settlement received town rights, and the complex was completed over the following decades. For centuries the stronghold remained in the hands of the Chełmno chapter.
The site entered history in the summer of 1410: Teutonic forces took up position near the ford on the Drwęca, and the Polish-Lithuanian army bypassed them on its march towards Grunwald. Later the stronghold was damaged in successive wars, and from the 18th century it fell into ruin, dismantled by locals for building stone.
Fragments of the walls and a readable outline of the layout have survived, but the hill itself is the greatest asset: the view takes in the village, the ribbon of the Drwęca and the rolling borderland landscape. A short, fairly steep path leads to the top, and the grounds are freely accessible.
