Książ towers above the Pełcznica gorge on the outskirts of Wałbrzych and ranks among the largest castle complexes in the country. Its beginnings are linked to Duke Bolko I the Strict and the late 13th century, although the earliest history of the residence remains poorly documented.
The castle changed owners and state allegiance many times; it belonged among others to Bohemian and Hungarian rulers and, in more recent times, to the von Hochberg family. The eastern wing has an 18th-century Baroque setting, the western one was added in Neo-Renaissance forms, and the showpiece of the interiors is the Maximilian Hall with a ceiling painted with mythological scenes.
During the Second World War the Germans took over the residence and began driving a complex of underground corridors beneath it, whose purpose has never been conclusively established; part of it is open as a tourist route. The castle is ringed by extensive garden terraces, with the Książ Landscape Park spreading around.
