Plac Zamkowy 1, Brzeg
Zamek w Brzegu is one of the most important Renaissance monuments in Central and Eastern Europe. It stands in the city centre, on Plac Zamkowy, a few steps from the market square and the boulevards along the Odra. The first written mention of a manor on this site dates from 1235, and over the following centuries the building repeatedly changed its form.
The greatest impression is made by the courtyard surrounded by three storeys of arcaded galleries and by the richly carved gatehouse with its row of busts of Piast rulers. The Renaissance rebuilding was begun by Frederick II and completed by his son George II — the Gothic stronghold became a grand residence. The interiors house the Museum of the Silesian Piasts.
From the 17th century the castle passed to the Habsburgs and later to Prussia. After wartime destruction it was rebuilt over several decades, and in 2018 it was added to the list of Polish historic monuments. Visiting the exhibitions takes about an hour; the courtyard itself can be seen during a walk around the old town.
