Wieś Janowice Wielkie
Zamek Bolczów is a picturesque ruin of a medieval stronghold hidden among granite outcrops above Janowice Wielkie, in the Rudawy Janowickie range. Marked hiking trails lead there from the centre of the village, and the last stretch of the climb runs along a forest path between boulders. It is one of the most visited surviving ruins in the vicinity of the Karkonosze mountains.
The stronghold was built in the second half of the 14th century. A hundred years later it was destroyed by burghers from Świdnica, and during the Thirty Years' War it was captured and burned by the Swedes. In the 18th century the ruins were cleared and partly secured for visitors — a Swiss-style inn operated here, and in the 20th century a tourist hostel was built nearby.
Admission is free and possible all year round. Walls merged with the rocks, narrow passages and views over the surrounding valleys impress children and adults alike, but the steep, uneven approach rules out pushchairs. On site there are wooden benches and a designated fireplace. In winter and after rain the paths can be slippery.
