Starościńska 1, Malbork
The castle in Malbork rises on the right bank of the Nogat river in the heart of Żuławy and covers around 21 hectares, which makes it the largest brick castle complex in Europe. It was built as the convent seat of a commander and from the 14th century served as the capital of the Teutonic Order's state and the residence of its grand masters. Later it also housed Polish kings. In 1997 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The complex is divided into the High, Middle and Lower Castle. The route leads through cloisters, the chapter house, refectories, courtyards and massive fortifications with towers and a moat. Palm vaults, the reconstructed figure of the Madonna on the eastern wall of the castle church and the view of the Nogat from the walls draw the most attention. Since 1961 the Castle Museum has presented collections of amber, weaponry and applied arts.
A visit usually takes about two hours, while the full historical route can exceed three. The museum offers family tours with tasks for children, led by a guide. Much of the exhibition is indoors, so the visit works well in poor weather too.
