Stary Rynek 1/2, Pabianice
Dwór Kapituły Krakowskiej in Pabianice is one of the best preserved secular Renaissance monuments in central Poland. The brick building stands by the Old Market Square on a slight rise and, together with the neighbouring church, forms the historic centre of the town. It was built for the Cracow chapter, which for centuries administered the surrounding estates.
The manor was laid out on a plan close to a square, with towers at the north-eastern and south-western corners; an older annexe with a round turret adjoins it from the west. The characteristic attic refers to solutions known from the Cloth Hall in Cracow and the town halls of Sandomierz and Szydłowiec. A thorough renovation uncovered, among others, the wall paintings by Jan Szulc.
The building houses the Museum of the Town of Pabianice with archaeological, historical, ethnographic and natural history displays. Among the most curious exhibits are a complete shaman's costume from South Africa and a Roman legionary's helmet. A visit takes about an hour and is comfortable in any weather.
