ul. Zamkowa 13, Nowy Wiśnicz
The castle in Wiśnicz stands on a wooded hill at the northern edge of a spur cutting into the Leksandrówka valley, right next to Nowy Wiśnicz in the Bochnia district. Its origins go back to the 14th century and are linked with the Kmita family of the Szreniawa coat of arms, who built up extensive estates around Wiśnicz. The founder was Jan Kmita, starost of Sieradz, Ruthenia and Kraków.
The building combines Renaissance and Baroque forms. It was raised on a quadrangular plan with an inner courtyard, and four towers crown its corners. From the east the eye is caught by the Baroque gateway shaped like a triumphal arch, while the whole is surrounded by a ring of bastion fortifications, among the best preserved in Lesser Poland. The expansion was carried out by the Lubomirski family, who took over the castle after the Kmitas.
The tourist route covers the state rooms, the underground passages and an exhibition of old instruments of torture; the castle is open mainly in the season from spring to autumn. A legend of the flyers is tied to the place — prisoners employed in the construction were said to have attempted escape on wings they built themselves.
