Castle of the Dukes of Ziębice

The castle ruins in Ząbkowice Śląskie are the remains of a Renaissance residence built in the first half of the 16th century on the site of an older Gothic ducal stronghold. The complex lies on the edge of the historic town centre, on Szpitalna street, surrounded by a park. Over the centuries it changed owners, was destroyed and rebuilt, until it finally fell into ruin.

What remains of the stronghold

The castle was laid out on a quadrangular plan, and its defence was strengthened by corner multi-storey bastions set diagonally, which allowed flanking fire. The main walls, the gate tower and the clock tower have survived, along with fragments of Renaissance decoration, including traces of the attic that crowned the walls. Most interiors have lost their ceilings, which clearly reveals the layout of the former wings.

The surroundings

A walk around the ruins takes less than an hour and combines easily with other sights in town: the famous Leaning Tower, the Regional Heritage Room and the In the Footsteps of Doctor Frankenstein trail. The grounds are open and spacious, and a walk here is also possible with a dog.
