ul. Stare Miasto, Dobczyce
The royal castle in Dobczyce occupies a rocky hill above the Raba river, today towering over the surface of Lake Dobczyckie. It was built during the period of feudal fragmentation as an upland stronghold, part of the defensive approaches to Kraków; in places its walls reached several metres in thickness. Thanks to this position it remained for centuries one of the more important watch points in this part of Lesser Poland.
The castle hosted crowned heads, among them Władysław Jagiełło and Queen Jadwiga, and under Kazimierz Jagiellończyk a school for the king's sons operated here, taught by Jan Długosz. From the late 16th century the Lubomirski family held the stronghold and rebuilt the Gothic structure into a Renaissance residence. Destroyed during the wars with Sweden, the site fell into ruin, and archaeological research and reconstruction were undertaken only in the 20th century.
The rebuilt interiors house a PTTK museum with finds from the excavations and furnishings of former chambers. The greatest asset of the hill remains the panorama: in good visibility it reaches the Wieliczka Foothills and the ranges of the Beskids, with the reservoir spreading out below the castle.
