Liw Castle stands a few kilometres west of Węgrów in Mazovia, on an artificial island among the wetlands of the Liwiec river. It was built as a ducal border stronghold guarding the crossing where Mazovia met Podlasie and the Lithuanian lands. The surrounding marshes served as a natural fortification and still give the site its picturesque character.
Construction was initiated by Duke Janusz I the Elder of Mazovia in the 15th century. The castle was laid out on a roughly quadrangular plan, with two parallel buildings and a gate between the courtyards. Its defences were strengthened in the 16th century, and the Swedish wars of the 17th century left the stronghold in ruin. In the 20th century the starost chancellery manor was rebuilt and housed the local council office and a village library.
Since 1963 the rebuilt manor has housed a Museum and Armoury. The displays cover the history of the castle, its iconography and weapons and armour from various periods. A visit takes about an hour, and in summer open-air re-enactments and knightly tournaments are held in front of the castle.
