ul. Zamkowa 10, Toszek
The castle in Toszek stands on a hill above the town in the Gliwice district and ranks among the most interesting defensive complexes in Upper Silesia. The exact beginnings of the stronghold are unknown — it is assumed that a fortified settlement guarded the spot as early as the early Middle Ages. A masonry building was raised in the 15th century by Duke Przemysław, and at the end of the 16th century a Renaissance residence was created here.
The castle passed from hand to hand: the Reden family bought it from the Habsburgs, and after a fire at the beginning of the 19th century the ruin was acquired by Abraham Guradze, remaining in his family until the end of the Second World War. Part of the old complex survives — the walls, the gateway, the courtyard and the tower, today the most recognisable element of the castle's silhouette.
The buildings house the cultural centre „Zamek w Toszku”, which organises exhibitions and outdoor events. Visitors climb the tower for a viewpoint over the town and its surroundings, and children can watch a puppet show telling the legend of the golden duck. Afterwards the castle café in the courtyard is a good place to rest.
