The Castle of the Archbishops of Gniezno stands in Uniejów on the Warta river in the Łódź region, at the edge of a park and close to the thermal baths. It was raised on the site of a wooden fortalice destroyed during a Teutonic raid and for centuries served as the residence of successive archbishops of Gniezno. Today it is one of the best preserved defensive buildings in the region.
Construction began in the 14th century on the initiative of Archbishop Jarosław Bogoria Skotnicki. After a fire in 1525 Stanisław of Gomolin had the castle remodelled, and it lost most of its Gothic features. In the first half of the 17th century it took on the form of an early Baroque residence, and in the 19th century Aleksander Toll added a Classicist and Romantic rebuilding.
The interiors are occupied by a hotel and restaurant, so they are not open to tourists. Visitors can enter the courtyard and the extensive castle park with its many species of trees and shrubs. The walk combines naturally with a visit to the spa quarter of the town.
