The Little Wawel on the Vistula

The castle in Baranów Sandomierski is a late Renaissance magnate residence built at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries to a design by Santi Gucci. For its harmonious proportions and rich decoration it is nicknamed the Little Wawel and counts among the best preserved Renaissance buildings in this part of Europe. It stands in the lowland landscape of the Vistula valley, in the Tarnobrzeg district, not far from Sandomierz.

What to see

The heart of the complex is the arcaded courtyard with cloisters and ornate stairs — the castle's most recognisable feature. Inside there is a museum with historic interiors and collections devoted to the residence and the region. From the outside, the corner turrets and the attic crowning the facades draw the eye.

The surroundings

The castle is set in a park of more than a dozen hectares with mature old trees, pleasant for a walk after the tour. A hotel occupies the outbuildings and a golf course lies next door. It makes a good stop between Sandomierz and the Sandomierz Forest.
