The ruins of the Teutonic castle lie right beside the old town of Toruń, above the Struga Toruńska stream, within the medieval town complex inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They are the remains of the oldest stronghold of the Teutonic Order in Chełmno Land, founded as a base for the conquest of the Prussians.
Building began in the 13th century. The layout differed from the regular quadrangular convent castles of the Order; alongside the main castle there were an outer ward and baileys. In 1454 the townspeople captured the stronghold, which marked the start of the Thirteen Years' War, and the town council had the walls pulled down almost immediately so that the Order could not return.
The best preserved element is the 14th-century gdanisko tower spanning the stream, which combined sanitary and defensive functions. You can also see stretches of medieval wall with arcades and battlements, and the castle cellars with an exhibition. The site is explored freely, on foot.
