Plac Zamkowy 1, Legnica
The Piast Castle rises above Legnica's old town and is one of the oldest ducal residences in Poland. It was built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier stronghold and for centuries served as a seat of power — first of the Piast dukes, later of Habsburg, Prussian and German authorities. Successive rebuildings gave it the shape of a sprawling palace with a preserved medieval core.
The most distinctive features are the two medieval towers — of St Peter and St Hedwig — absorbed into the later structure. Conservation work in the 1960s uncovered the remains of a Romanesque castle chapel, one of the region's more valuable archaeological finds. The ornate Renaissance gateway is also worth attention.
The castle houses public institutions, so access to the interiors is limited; the Copper Museum in Legnica provides information. The setting and the walls can be viewed freely while walking around Castle Square.
