The Castle of the Dukes of Oleśnica stands in the centre of Oleśnica, some fifteen kilometres north-east of Wrocław, right by the historic town core. Its oldest parts go back to the 13th century, when the Piast dukes of Oleśnica raised a masonry defensive seat here. The castle remains one of the most imposing secular buildings in Lower Silesia.
From the Piast period a part of the Gothic tower survives, later raised, decorated with sgraffito and crowned with a cupola. After 1495 the castle passed to the Poděbrady family, and Duke Jan rebuilt it from Gothic into Renaissance style in the 16th century. The Württembergs, Brunswicks and Hohenzollerns followed, each leaving a mark on the shape of the complex.
After 1945 the building stood empty and for a year housed a Soviet unit of the International Red Cross preparing transports of Allied prisoners of war. Today it is the seat of a Voluntary Labour Corps, and visitors can see the courtyard, the picturesque arcaded galleries and the reliefs set into the walls.
